Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas
No clinical studies were performed in this localization. On the other hand, effect mechanism studies with Avemar were performed in pancreas adenocarcinoma cell lines ( L. G. Boros et al., 'Wheat germ extract decreases glucose uptake and RNA ribose formation but increases fatty acid synthesis in MIA pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells', Pancreas, Vol. 23., No. 22, pp. 141-147). The main results of the investigations can be summarized as follows:
- 1.2-C13CO2 glucose isotopes were used to trace the fate of glucose within the cell, with Avemar added in concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/ml. Avemar decreased the glucose uptake, the incorporation of the isotope into ribosomal RNA and the release of carbon-dioxide in a dose-dependent manner.
- Within the pentose cycle, the oxidation of glucose and the amount of nucleic acid ribose demonstrated a dose-dependent decrease.
- Cellular fatty acid synthesis was increased by Avemar, indicating an improvement in the differentiation potential of the cell and the shifting of the tumour cell's metabolism towards that of a normal cell.
