Leukemia

No clinical study was conducted on leukaemia. On the other hand, part of the investigations regarding the effect mechanism was performed on Jurkat T-cell lymphoid leukaemia cell lines.

The main results are as follows:
  1. Avemar decreased malignant cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Such a reaction can be elicited in normal peripheral human lymphocytes as well, but only using a dosage 50 times higher than the recommended dose.
  2. An accumulation of sub-G1 fractions and a decrease in S-phase cells was observed.
  3. The induction of apoptosis was investigated using several methods. Caspase-mediated poly(ADP ribose) proteolysis played an important role, as it slowed down and stopped DNA repair.
  4. The inhibition of glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase and transketolase activity was first demonstrated in this system.
